"What is Taekwondo?"

Taekwondo is a modern Korean martial art, characterized by fast, high, jumping, spinning kicks. It is an all-around program that offers self-defense training, physical exercise, and artistic expression; all taught by an experienced instructor.

Philosophy

The true Tae Kwon Do practitioner extends the scope of his art to all aspects of life, in order to achieve harmony with nature and thus a stable and peaceful existence. Taekwondo is not only an excellent method of self defense, but a way of life. These qualities can be traced back to the influence of Buddhism, and its aim of the "Mastery of Self". Through the philosophy of taekwondo, a student can rid him or herself of the ego, and live in harmony with the universe.

From "Karate" to "Taekwondo"

The word "karate" (empty hand) is a Japanese word that has developed into a generic term for all types of Asian fighting arts. Actually, there are three main divisions of the generic martial art of karate: (1) actual karate is an Okinawan-Japanese style of fighting, with abrupt movements along straight lines; (2) "Kung-fu" (tasks) and "Chuan-fa": (system of boxing) are Chinese styles that use flowing, circular movements; and (3) taekwondo, which incorporates the abrupt, linear movements of karate and the circular patterns of Kung-fu with its own unique kicking techniques.

Literally translated, taekwondo breaks down to "tae" meaning to kick with the foot, "kwon" meaning to punch or strike with the hand, and "do" meaning art or way. Therefore, taekwondo translates to "the art of kicking and punching." Its physical aspects come from the kicking and punching, while its spiritual aspects come from the art.

Many times the word 'karate' is used in the name of a taekwondo school. This seems strange since karate is a Japanese word and taekwondo is Korean. This occurs purely as a business decision; many people are familiar with the word "karate", so when they see it they will know what a taekwondo school is about.

Objectives of Taekwondo
To develop an appreciation for taekwondo as a sport and as an art
To achieve physical fitness through positive participation
To improve mental discipline and emotional equanimity
To learn self-defense skills
